![]() ![]() It's easier to run from battles than before which, when compounded with the generous amount of XP you get from new explorative quests/discoveries, means you barely have to engage with the game at all until you get to the boss floor, where you then grind to beat the boss.Īll in all I felt far less connected with any of my characters (as in no authorship or interest in their builds) and less ingrained in the dungeon. Classes seem more bland, gear much more of a grind as you need to upgrade it (which then makes getting new gear less exciting, as it won't be stronger than your previous +5 weapon until you grind it up to also be +5), less enemy creativity (and I'm getting OHKO'd more than before), and a dungeon design that doesn't feel special at all. With races and classes you have more options than before, but it feels like there's just an optimal race/class combo that then limits options instead of enhancing it, and none of these feel particularly interesting as even within a class there isn't much authorship for your character. You're back to one big mega-dungeon instead of IV's overworld with minidungeons, but it feels more disjointed than ever now that you can teleport to any floor you want. But in doing so they forgot a lot of what those roots were about. The series has continually iterated on itself and grown with new mechanics and new ideas, and V was a step back to try to get back to its roots. In a vacuum it's good, but if if you don't know about it then you should go play Etrian Odyssey IV instead. A focus on extremely well tuned challenge, a good RPG class system, and an incredible mapping system really make the games a joy.Īnd I'm saying that as an obvious prelude to say that Etrian Odyssey V is not nearly as good. It's a series where each mainline iteration, and I've played them all, is better than the last, and Etrian Odyssey IV is one of the best turn based RPGs of all time. The anime artstyle is crap but luckily 99% of the game you're just walking around a dungeon and fighting monsters of completely different art direction and assets. I absolutely love the Etrian Odyssey franchise. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
